The Governor-General has proposed sending young offenders to bush camps instead of jail.
Major General Michael Jeffery raised the idea during his visit to the mining town of Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western Australia.
Major General Jeffery says the idea could be applied as an alternative for juveniles ordered to serve short jail sentences.
He says the concept of a bush camp would be more beneficial.
"Perhaps on a cattle station somewhere, with very good instructors and leaders and mentors and a proper program of education and sport and work might produce some good results," he said.
